Tips
CARING FOR FLOWERS
- Changing the water in your vase is the best way to keep flowers long lasting
- Clean your vases with bleach to kill bacteria from previous flowers
- Remove all foliage from stems of flowers that will be below the water line to avoid bacteria from growing in the vase
- When you receive a floral arrangement always make sure the water level is deep enough for the flowers to drink (possibly adding water daily)
- Don’t place flowers in direct sunlight, over radiators of under heat vents, keep in a well ventilated part of the room
- Use lukewarm water for fresh cut flowers as there is less oxygen in it, and it helps prevent air bubbles in the stem that will block water uptake
- Spring bulbs such as tulips and iris prefer cold water
- Cut stems at an angle as this gives the stem a bigger area to take up more water, and stops it resting on the bottom of the vase and sealing itself
- Keep your cut flowers away from your fruit as this causes them to wilt faster
- If you receive one of our beautiful hand-tied bouquets packed in a water bag simply cut a hole in the bag over the sink, remove the cellophane and put flowers in a vase
- Water tubes are simply for transportation and need to be removed from stems and flowers need to be placed in fresh water
PURCHASING FLOWERS
- Think about which flowers you really want for each specific occasion; if the flowers are for someone else you should think of the person they are for in terms of personality and taste as well as the special event the flowers are for (a birthday, a wedding gift, anniversary gifts etc). If they are for yourself you should think of where you would like to display them, this will help you choose the right colour as well as those with the perfect fragrance for your room
- Talk to your florist – we know our stuff and can help you pick flowers that are in season or are particularly suited to your occasion or budget
- If purchasing vases for your event or party show florist prior to purchasing all of them to ensure it is the proper size and shape
- Choose flowers in season to ensure quality and availability
- Choosing one to two types of flowers for your arrangement can help make it cost effective
- If you are set on using peonies choose June for your event
- With a small bouquet or arrangement of flowers, monochromatic colours give the illusion of a larger arrangement
